テッド・ターナーによって創立。現在は タイム・ワーナー の傘下に在る。本社はアメリカ合衆国ジョージア州アトランタ (ジョージア州) アトランタ市。1991年の湾岸戦争時の報道で、戦時下のイラク国内からライブ映像を世界に配信するなど、大きく株を上げた。現在はライバルであるFOXニュースと熾烈な視聴率競争を演じている。
